Rhea Rollmann (she/her) is an award-winning journalist, writer and audio producer based in St. John's, NL, and is the author of A Queer History of Newfoundland (Engen Books, 2023).

She's a founding editor of The Independent NL and her journalism has appeared in Briarpatch Magazine, CBC, Xtra Magazine, Chatelaine, PopMatters, Riddle Fence and more.

​

Her academic work has been published in the Journal of Gender Studies, Labor Studies Journal, Canadian Woman Studies, Just Labour: A Journal of Work and Society, Canadian Theatre Review, Canadian Review of Sociology, Screen Bodies and elsewhere.

Her work has garnered three Atlantic Journalism Awards and she’s a two-time Canadian Association of Journalists’ awards finalist. In 2022 she was awarded the Andrea Walker Memorial Prize for Feminist Health Journalism. Her academic awards include the Abella Scholarahip for Studies in Equity, the Doris Anderson Graduate Scholarship in Feminist Research, the University Medal for Academic Excellence in Anthropology, the Osgoode Hall Law School Helena Orton Memorial Scholarship, as well as OGS and SSHRC research fellowships. In addition she’s been awarded the Memorial University Faculty/Staff Volunteer of the Year Award, Memorial University Award for Outstanding Contribution to Graduate Student Life, and a Vagina Warrior Award from Intersections MUNL.

She also has an extensive background in labour organizing and queer/trans activism, and is Program Director at CHMR-FM, a community radio station in St. John's, NL.

Rhea is open to freelance journalism assignments and commissions. Particular interests include: Queer/2SLGBTQIA+ issues; labour/feminist/social movement politics; travel reportage; and anything literary/arts and culture related.

​

Rhea is also open to short-term research contracts and assignments, and has previously done contract research and communications work for the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), NL Federation of Labour, Canadian Federation of Students, and others.
